Siye matters
(Tis Abay)
No man’s fate, not even what has happened any of the CUD leaders, reveal EPRDF’s excesses and the hypocrisy of the West than Siye Abraha’s . Pre and post election violence, the west has, at least, given lip service to human rights abuses, condemned political detention and gently nudged their darling African leaders, Meles Zenawi, to change. Amid all that, Siye’s name has barely got a mention.
Some Ethiopians think Siye Abraha has been victim of a system to which he was a willing accomplice during his days as one of the most powerful politicians in Ethiopia. Others blame him for having his finger prints all over the current ills of Ethiopia, ethnicization and lack of democratic institutions just like his ex-comrades within EPRDF. For that and other reasons, a lot of Ethiopians who say they are genuinely committed to democracy and freedom in Ethiopia are apathetic about the gross injustice being committed against him by the Meles regime.
I take issues with such attitudes. First, genuine defenders of rights don’t let their political judgment cloud their opinion in the face of injustice. Second, the ethinicization of Ethiopian politics is a generational issue. As Messay Kebede argued it is “both an aspect and a consequence of the radicalization of Ethiopian students and intellectuals in the 60s and early 70s.” A member of that generation, Siye Abraha shares his own blame for that if, indeed, we argue that there were better alternatives to analyzing and solving Ethiopia’s problems. Third, it is unfair to apportion disproportionate blame on a politician who had spent most of his time in power away from the federal government for the lack of democratic institutions in the country.
Siye isn’t an angel. He has made mistakes. We can site tons of them. But he went to prison for a big cause, a cause the democratic movement in Ethiopia holds dear: the sovereignty of Ethiopia. He showed courage to face Meles Zenawi when he realized EPRDF hadn’t taken its job of protecting Ethiopia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity seriously. In that sense, he is a unique figure. He is EPRDF through and through; but he has the same passions for our country as we have. He is EPRDF; but he has suffered the humiliation and abuse of the system like the opponents of EPRDF. He is EPRDF; but he has taken Meles to task. He is EPRDF; but he is not corrupt (as the evidences provided by the prosecutor in his trial couldn’t show that).
Siye, for me, is more of a unifying figure than a polarizing politician. Let’s embrace him and stand up against the abuses he is facing.

Siye has to get every right as an Ethiopian to be judged by the court, indepedently of his political view. The Meles regime didn't gave him his right.
But with respect Ethio-Zagol, it is difficult to take Siye as a unifying figure. Especially for me, as an Ethiopian(born in Asmara, son of a soldier),
1.he said and a lot wors things on us and our fathers and mothers.
2. he gave Eritrea to Isayas. Ethiopianism for my Father was something precious and for me too. By Siye, i doubt.
With Reconciliation, i am ready to forgive.
P.S. We need more ppl.like you ethio-zagol
Without reconcilation
"we are friends with Shabia, if you want to defened or revenge the ill treatment that shabia gave you, go grab the gun...." That was Siye Abrha statment infront of many Ethiopians that were kicked out from eritrea, after they have been stripped out of all of their belongings...as it was still fresh memory...these thousands and thousands citizens were families of soliders...some that had both eri and Ethiopian heratage...
so when this idiot named Siye made these type of blunt message in Jan Meda, he didn't think it was going to hunt him back one day....
when war broke out between the two cousins...he was running from prison cell to prison cell giving a hugh to the former military officers that were put to prison by Woyanes...these soldiers were good Ethiopians, who have the country national interest at heart....Seyae - a phuken shmuck, a narrow minded, racist bastard couldn't even work with Meles and co. who are half eri/tigrea. Because he was a 'clean cut tigrae from Tembaen' or was it Sherae??
Siye matters when all them woyane pigs start sluathering eachother....just like by the miracle of the Almighty the two cousins shabia and woyane had a fall out of their love affairs...who would've think that would happen? They had Ethiopa in a golden plate but they couldn't even agree on exploiting Ethiopia together - Derowenes Ye'leba neger.
There are more things to come, to happen and give us lessons. Through all of it, Ethiopians will figure out something..hopefull positive thing.
Unlike the perivous poster, I will never forgive people like siye and his comareds who just stabbed him in a back...though I applaud them whenever they do something like that to eachother.

I haven't proof that Siye was truly jailed for the fact that he stood against Meles for a united Ethiopia. He is as notorious and big-mouthed as all of his friends.… I have no sympathy for him. But the fact that he is not being properly prosecuted for his crimes is a manifestation of the rotten system in Ethiopia that millions are struggling to change.
I may stand for Siye in terms of his violated rights to get fair justice in his case. Such injustice is a common occurrence in Ethiopia today and this may not be unique to his case at any rate. To support his quest for justice is hence supporting the establishment of a just system in the country.
I however, doubt his unifying factor as he is not different in terms of his political thinking and the arrogance inherent in EPRDF. I remember his words in Kurfachelle-Garamuleta (Harar)in 1992/63 where he said "Let them come and we will teach them the art of warefare". He was refering to OLF armed men who were surrounded en mass after the breakdown of their unholy alliance with the EPRDF. He was not against the killing of Christian residents by the same people. Therefore, if I consider his arrogance I do not forgive him, but as to the injustice made on him I fully stand for a fair trial.

siye was and is an ant-iethiopian like every weyane member. he is in prison, because meles doesn´t like him not because he fought for the sovereign ethiopia. "ahiya lahiya biraget tirs ayisaberim"
Come on brothers/sisters! We have to make a wise assessment of what we are going to say at this dangerous time for our country. I strongly agree with what Ethio-Zagol has said about Siye. At this point, I believe that we have to welcome anyone, carefully and cautiously, who return to their consciousness and stood up for the truth!
We all remember what our leaders have said about the EPDRF members like meles and bereket. They stated that they are ready to forgive, reconcile, and work together for the good of the country. Even after they were thrown to jail, they were mediated by two Ethiopian brothers to solve the situation shortly for the good of the country. History will not forget what has happened and who did what. However, we have to learn wisdom from our leaders, again for the good of the country.
I have three reasons to support Ethio-Zagol on this matter.
First, as ethio zagol said, “Siye isn’t an angel. He has made mistakes. We can site tons of them. But he went to prison for a big cause, a cause the democratic movement in Ethiopia holds dear: the sovereignty of Ethiopia. He showed courage to face Meles Zenawi when he realized EPRDF hadn’t taken its job of protecting Ethiopia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity seriously.” I believe that this action of siye should owe him the support of all Ethiopians. Here is what siye has said in front of the court early in his detention.
"My case has nothing to do with corruption. It is purely political. I am kept here because the people who put me behind bars are people who have power. They want me behind bars because if I am set free, I will use my constitutional right to speak and write freely, I will use my right to assemble, to unite. I am a politician. And if I am set free I will exercise this right, because this is what my country needs. My country is at a time when it needs consultation, reconciliation and free discussion. If I am set free I will do that. This is the right that I fought for for a quarter of a century of my life. And it is precisely this that my captors want to prevent. The Police are troubled because they cannot find a case of corruption against me. This is my 49th day in prison and 8th appearance before the court. My captors' problem should not be the problem of the court. The Supreme Court should give me justice. This is a question of justice. Will my country's judges give me justice or not? That is the question. What the court will decide and this case-being watched by many-will create a precedence. The precedence is "will my country's judges serve justice irrespective of politics?" Siye Abreha
Regardless of the wrongs he might have done while he was with EPDRF, his words show that he is a true Ethiopian, and worth the support of his brothers and sisters. I believe he woke up at the right time, when he realized who Meles and Berekt really are, and stood-up for his country.
Secondly, we can prove our Tigrian brothers what the preacher of hatred, Meles, preaches is false and confirm that what we need is to stand together with any one who is loyal to his country.
Third, this action would encourage other EPDRF members who realize the wickedness and destructive behavior of the party towards their country but assume they will face rejection from their people. By our action we can send this message, “we always want to welcome our brothers as far as you stand for your country”.
May God save Ethiopia from its enemies!
I don't think it is a good idea to choose and pick individulas. when we do that, what we are saying is all the other prisoners deserve to be there. It is much better to talk about the system and justice in general.
Thanks (Ethio-Zagol)
EVEN IF THE TIGRAYANS FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE SEYE IS AN ORDINARY CRIMINAL. MELES HAS EXPLOITED THE SITUATION AS HE CAN EXPLOIT THE CORRUPTION OF ANY ONE IN HIS CIRCLE TO FURTHER HIS AUTHORITARIAN GOALS. BUT THE FACT REMAINS, SEYE HAS INVOLVED IN CORRUPTION. HE IS A HERO FOR SOME-BUT HE IS NOT ABOVE THE LAAW. HE HAS TO FACE THE CONSEQUENCES OF HIS ACTS.
As long as he is staying in prison, Siye will continue to be a polarizing figure in Ethiopian politics. First, for what he did and said while he was with the woyanes and second, for what he didn’t do and say while in prison. A case in point: Qinijit!! At least he has no partaking in the imprisonment of Ethiopia’s best “zagols” (leaders of Qinijit) and the killings of innocent Ethiopians in the aftermath of the 2005 election. Also if Zenawi and his cronies are prosecuted for the atrocities they are committing in Somalia, he, obviously, will come out clean of any future allegations.
I don’t think it is correct to pity him and crown him as a real Ethiopianist due to the fact that the woyane justice system is abusing him. One thing for sure, all of us may denounce his mistreatment in jail, while not forgetting his involvement and participation with those who created such a system that is mistreating him now. Let’s not forget that he was there from the get-go.
Having said these, I don’t think it is time to judge or label Siye now. Let’s wait till he is released and let him prove himself that first he apologize for what did in the past and second let him establish himself to show to all of us that he is a real Ethiopianist! For me, Siye’s case is a wait and see phenomenon!

I belive the time has come for ,we, Ethiopians to prove our selves whether we are what we affirm .At times,we have stated we are peaceful democratic movements ,who are willing to work ,even, with T.P.L.F.We affirm the above statments. Are we ready to put this in to practice? let me ask one more question what will be the response of the kelati prisoners conserning this case?.After all ,they are the ligitmate leaders.Professer Mesefin(who is not a member of the elected officils)said "we want to go the south African way."In addition,I remember not long ago reading a letter from kelati-in it it said "we want to pursue through peaceful means;we are convinced and are resolved to overcome hate with love and fear with hope."I dont believe people who have seen such tring times will argue other wise ,than to be willing to reach across diverse political organizations.Keeping this in mind, can we be persuaded to fight for the cause of mr.Siye.If we mean what we said here is an opportunity we can use.
Personally, I do agree with the first part of E.Z's suggestion, but ,not with the second aspect.
Aside his past,Mr.Siye and his small band of men have showen willingness to chalenge the present rulers. His group did indeed raised important policy issue;belived they can address the issue through the part's legal fourm,it turned out, they were criminalized-neverthless,from that day to this T.P.L.F is left in a position that can not be the same.Through what transpired during the split;we were able to know that this man is full Ethiopian-and as such he renaonced what is commonly referered as"TENBERKAKINET."While I agree with E.Z on the general idea ,at this moment, I dont have any relevant information that will lead me to believe ,he will be a unifing figure for the opposition:I will reserve this until the time where there will be available evidence to base my decission. I want to say this-I will give any man the benefiet to have been wrong at one time in life and to amend his way as Mr. Siye did. This I do on the ground that to be human is to err-if you think you have not made mistakes, you probably have not lived life yet-keep on living it will happen when you least expect it. Finally, taking the above points in to considerations:that the kelati officials will likely be in favour of supporting this idea, that he and his collegues raised important issues, and that he is reputedly to be Ethio-nationalst against this idea of "memberkek.",that we have repeatdely said we are willing to work with different political partys,if so that time comes to put it in to pratice-if we we mean what we said. Finally, there is no other way to learn to work with other groups but by just doing it-and we willfind out that this is more liberating-it help us to keep check long standing habits.
I really feel sorry for this man. Regardless of his political views and association with TPLF, he deserves a fair and speedy trial. To be frank with you, I had my disagreements with him concerning Article 39 but truly admired him when he stood up and defended our country from the unwarranted agression of the Eritrean regime. If it wasn't for Meles, who stopped the 2000 war, Ethiopia by now would have had a sea port of its own and Isayas Afewerki would have been a history. Siye is a patriotic and nationalist fellow who could unite Ethiopians who are currently divided along ethnic lines. We ethiopians need people like Siye with unique characterstics at this crucial time in our history.
Whether we like him or not, Siye deserves a fair trial. But I don't beleive Siye is a unifying figure. Siye is arogant and full of hatered to Amharas like his master Meles.
Siye diserved what he was did agansty his people. He is a dump and an idiot person and now,he sitt with ex dergue members in alem bechgng.good
I think people are making mistakes just by taking side line against EPRDF(Melese). How on earth do you say that Siye is good for Ethiopian? Unity. Do not you know that he is the most arrogant of all EPRDF officials?
I think Seye does deserve a fair trial like any Ethiopian. However there is no proof that he stood for Ethiopian Unity but his arrogance had no bounds !one instance is the steps he took to destroy Ethiopian Airlines by dismissing on one single day, soon after he came to power 30 very experienced management Personnel who had questioned his policy .
The airline has never recovered from the loss of so many trained and experienced management
After all Siye is woyane. Once woyane you woyane for ever. Never forget he is the man who send out his dogs ( he was minister of defence at that time) to kill inocent Oromos when OLF went out against woyane. He is the same person that ordered the murder of inocent Amharas when prof Asrat and others found AAPO. And he is the main reason for the death of prof Asrat. His own friend Tamirat said that he is the reason for his arrest.
I will never be fooled by woyane. When they realsed him I am sue they have strok a deal to crack down KINIGT. Mark my word he will start his job of killing us sooner.
In search of a Hero ??????
It is pathetic.
sion about siye or others should be in the context of reconcilation the word never should be erased we should not say we will never excuse when one is bitterly victimized by other one he maynot forget that man but should have a gut to forgive him other wise we will be in vicious cycle of violence like our forefathers as to me inspite of what ever he said &he has done i have excused him he has tried to talk while we all are muzzled at a gun point
I don\'t know why many people talk about Siye. At one time he was prominent ERDF man and now think of him as any ordinary person he does nto do any thing in ethiopian politics. Please don\'t give place by talking much about him. If you look his previous record, he was one of those who spoiled ethiopia history for every and cannot be excused for that, he will not be a man that contribute something good for ethiopia. Ignore him forever.

Hello all!
iye
siye has been one of the founder of the Ethnic based politics in Ethiopia ,he is like the other weyanes ,he fought against Ethiopia ,alongside with shabya ,
Do u remember guys, when the weyanes were marching to addis ,they were tearing the Ethiopian flag,After they had entered to addis ,they had destroyed The Ethiopian institutions starting from the ethiopian military ,security forces ,airforce and so on ,at the same time they had given our x - province to ertrea including asseb. In due course the weyanes had asked UN (united nation) for a recognition of our province ertrea as another country ,never in the world had happened like this , a government who has asked for the succession of its own territory .This all odd staffed had happened when siye was in power .
ofcourse siye had contributed in fighting shabya ,when shabya was marching against the Ethiopian army in 1998 .siye had mobilized the Ethiopian ppl ,The heroic ethiopian ppl beated shabya , for that part we have to recognise his contribution.
Ethiopia will prevail
